Ola's Extra work - Social and Cultural Identities

                           Social and Cultural Identities

Every person has multiple dimension of identities. In communication and daily interactions, we define who we are. We negotiate our identities with people who are similar to us and different from us, our identities are developed in social interactions.

Gender Identities

Our gender identity is influenced by the way we are treated by our parents, other relatives, neighbours and friends. boys and girls are dressed in different ways and colours, they are introduced to different types of toys. In every culture, there are communications and interactions which are considered feminine, masculine or androgynous. Nowadays the media influences our identity.

Age Identities

Age is also one aspect of our identity. Cultures view and treat people of different ages in different ways. For example, In Asian cultures getting old is seen as positive. Elderly people are respected and they are cared for by their children. In some many European cultures, not all elderly people are highly respected. In many cases, they may live separated from the younger generation and feel lonely.

Spiritual Identity

Depending on the culture and context of spirituality, Identity can be more or less understood. In some countries, people might even be ready to die for their beliefs. People's spiritual identity might even lead to conflicts or in worst cases war.

Class Identity

Our class identity influences how we behave and communicate with other people. It relates to a person economic positions and cultural practices based on jobs and value.

National Identity

A person's citizenship of a nation is referred to as a national identity. National Identity is about a person's identity or sense of belonging to one state or to one nation, it's the belief and loyalty towards one's country.

Regional Identity

In every country, there are regions with which people identify themselves. In some countries, regional identities are stronger than national identity. Regional identities may also carry positive, negative, real or not real generalizations about people living there.

Personal Identity

Our personal identity means how we perceive ourselves. Our personal identity is vital for us and we communicate and negotiate that with other people. Personal Identity is the concept that develops about oneself that evolves over the course of life. For example, where did they grow up, or the colour of their skin and what they believe in.

Evaluation- Identity Unit 1

                                  Evaluation- Identity Unit 1

this evaluation, I will talk about levels 2 Performing Arts students project called Identity which is based on race and feminism. We performed the project at Westminster Kings College theatre in front of levels 3 Performing Arts students and other students from a different course. At first, we have watched the levels 3 performance and it was mindblowing. As a group, we have worked so well as a team in the rehearsals and helped each other in need. The message behind the project was that at the end of the day we are who we are, we all should respect and support one another no matter our race or sexuality. We no longer should hide in the shadows from everyone, its time to show our true selves.

In this project, I have played a character named Ola which is based on myself and my personality. I liked playing my character because I was independent and full of confidence. My favourite part of playing my character was when in the beginning Im saying ''Zawsze bede soba '' which means '' I always will be myself '' because my character was full of joy and happiness on the stage. The challenges I have faced creating and performing my character was to stay in a character and to have facial expressions while acting. In the performance, we had a dance routine which was made by me to a song called This is Me and it was the final piece of the play, everyone who took part of it did brilliant but there were some challenges with teaching them every step as they tend to easily forget or didn't do it with energy.

In the performance, I have used my physicality well while playing my character, for example, I have walked on the stage full of energy with a big smile on my face and I have walked towards the circle while flipping my hair when she was mentioning the lighter skin in the play, also when she mentioned the darker skin, I have looked up and down and created a reaction towards a black student standing next to me and run away screaming towards the backstage. The parts that I did practically well in the performance was doing the choreography for the song called This is me because I didn't forget any step and I did it perfectly, also playing my character because I did enjoy acting full of joy and positivity because I was happy just being myself. The parts that were my weakest in the performance was the ending piece when I asked private student questions because I didn't use any facial expressions and my vocal range wasn't really clear.

I think that I have worked well as a team because I was listening to everyone idea's and opinions, plus I have helped some students in our class with the choreography after college. The issues that all of us have faced during the performance was that in front of the audience some of us did had a lot of energy but some of us were lack of energy. Furthermore, all of us didn't project our voices while performing on the stage. The project was interesting for us to work on and perform on the stage as we have never done a play done by everyone in the class but it was fun, I loved it and I had enjoyed performing in front of the audience our project. I think that this project was a success because we all tried our best to stay in a character and our confidence being on stage was over the top. The part that did go well was how all of us did put our mind into it and we didn't let anything distract us from performing. The part that didn't go so well was our energy on the stage especially the choreography as some of the students did look tired doing it.

Overall, I think that this project was a fantastic play for us to perform and it had an interesting storyline. I liked our play because it was childish and I had a lot of fun doing it. I think that this performance was amazing and everyone should be very proud of themselves as we all have shined on the stage. The part that I would like to improve on for this project in the future would be to have more energy and fun doing it, also staying in the characters. The thing that I would like to develop in my next project would be to have more acting skills and to work on a script or musical.

Ola's Extra Work - History

                                            History

Race

In the 1950s, massive immigration and rise of racial violence, also prejudice was happening around these times. In many areas including Birmingham, Nottingham and West London have experienced rioting as white people were afraid of the black community. Some black people have been working in a country they have brought up to look up to and some have witnessed racial prejudice which they have never experienced before. The legislation had allowed people from the Empire and Commonwealth rights to enter Britain because they have carried a British passport. Under political pressure, the government enacted laws three times in less than a decade to make immigration for black people harder and harder. By 1972, legislation meant that a British passport holder born overseas could only live in Britain If they had a work permit or provide information that a parent or grandparent had been born in the UK. Children that are born to white families in the remnants of the Empire or the former colonies could enter Britain but someone that comes from black families could not. In 1954, Britain's non-white people population was low by thousands. By 1970 their numbered accurate was 1.4 million, a third of these children were born in the United Kingdom.

Feminism

In the 1750s, Women's has gone through battles to get their vote in the UK during ridicule assault, imprisonment and even death but half of the century they have been protesting peacefully with no results. By 1903 a Manchester woman named Emmeline Pankhurst created the women's social and political union. Emmelina and her suffragettes were radical, political and fearless and they have decided that the old constitutional practices of just simply petitioning and asking members of the Parliament to give them the right to vote but unfortunately it wasn't enough and they didn't listen to them. The peaceful protests had gone on for 50 years and now they have decided to turn it into action tactic which they called militancy. The suffragettes most respectful and well behaved middle-class women employed tactics that shocked society, they held the biggest demonstration in British history till 1908. After that, violence was used against the demonstrators so they threw stones to smash the windows making the point that women's lives weren't regarded as important as property in those times. The suffragettes were protesting in Parliament or at least trying to as over 1,000 suffragettes were locked up in prisons. Many of them continued their protest by going on hunger strikes and being forced by the authorities. Emily Davidson was one of these women, she been a teacher but was committed a full-time suffragette. She wrote vividly about her experience in her diary while she was in prison. By 1917, Emily Davidson staged the most dramatic and dangerous publicity stunt. The Epsom Derby was a highlight of the event as the kind and queen come to see the racing, Emily Davidson was there because the king's horse Anmar was running. As the horses rounded the bed, she slipped under the barrier and stepped in front of the king's horse and  It hit her really hard which made her died four days later.

Rehearsals

   Rehearsals

Tuesday 6th October - It was my first day, all of us were in the theatre and I was finding out about the monologues and the play that I have missed as I came into the course later and we were going over what we had remembered from the last lesson which I wasn't in, some students did forget about their positions and their lines but one girl in our class did remember everything from the beginning to the end and she was telling us what is next and what we are supposed to do. Rob was checking the lights' effects so that all of us got used to what it feels like performing on the stage while rehearsing the play I was confused and didn't know what to do so I was just following everyone. The part that went well about the rehearsal was the concentration and that everyone did try their best to remember everything. The part that didn't go so well about the rehearsal was low energy, all of us looked like we just walked on the stage and most of us have forgotten the lines. I think all of us have to improve on the energy and staying in character, and also try to deliver the message while saying the lines.

Monday 12th October - On today's lesson, we were rehearsing our play over and over again. At first, students did not pay much attention but after a few tries, they did. While rehearsing, the teacher added an extra piece of the play when I and another student have to act like we were about to fight and later on shy because we get to see that we are not so different from one another by asking each other questions for example “where do you come from” and “ Do you like school?”. Afterwards, we were in the theatre and we were continuing with our rehearsal of the play. This time every student was focused and knew exactly what to do but I was still getting used to it as it was only my second rehearsal. I think that the part of the rehearsal that went well was how everyone did remember their lines and was focused while rehearsing in the theatre. I think the part that didn't go well was the lack of energy and concentration. I think that all of us have to improve on having more energy and try to be focused all the time in the rehearsals.

Tuesday 13th October - On this day, we were rehearsing the choreography that I have made for everyone as the last ending piece of the play for a song called This is Me. At first, I showed everyone the choreography and the teacher and students did love it but because it was way too long we had to learn only the first part of it. While teaching some students the movements step by step, they were complaining about the fact that it was way too easy but I had to make it easy so I couldn't change it. After that, we were rehearsing our play with the choreography as well and while rehearsing we were being recorded by our teacher so that later on when we got back home we could look back and see how we can improve ourselves on the performance. In the next lesson, we were in the theatre but only for 15 minutes, we were rehearsing our play as Rob had to go somewhere. The part that went well was that everyone was on good behaviour and when it came to learning the choreography those students who took part in it did well. The part that didn't go well was the lack of energy and not remembering the lines. I think that all of us have to remember our lines as the performance is on Monday and try our best to give everything we got on the rehearsals and performances.

Monday 19th October - Today was the last day to rehearsal for the performance, on first rehearsal we were just practising our play to get everything right and see what lights effect works great for every scene and monologue. On the second rehearsal, we run through the whole thing and then teaching students that took part the choreography to perfection so they remember every step before the performance. On the third rehearsal, we run through the whole play again and after lunchtime was our last rehearsal before the performance and on the last rehearsal, everyone was so full of energy. The part that did go well was that everyone was so full of energy and we have gained so much confidence. All of us worked so great as a team and I cannot wait for the next project as we got so much better at acting and our concentration got better as well.

Ola's Extra Work - My Identity

              My Identity

The journey of discovery

My journey was like any other except the fact when I was a teenager I didn’t have wifi in Poland so you could say I lived like in old times. When I was young just a child I used to play outside with my friends and sister and living my life but back then I didn’t know who I was. I used to consider some things normal and desirable than I do now and make bad decisions but as I grow up, I moved to the UK when I was about 10 years old, and then that’s when slowly I started to know who I was as a person. In high school, I have discovered my sexuality like I knew I was different than any other, The way I was thinking and seeing the point of view was so different. At the same time, I didn’t know anything about my sexuality so I thought something was wrong with me and till I have turned like 19 years old I have found out about it and realised I'm not so different as there are people in this world who go through the same thing as I do.

I have learned something throughout my journey, is that we all change when you think about it. We are all different people, all through our lives and that’s good as you got to keep moving as long as you don’t forget all the people that you used to be.

Race

In this generation, the race hasn’t changed as black people still fighting for their rights and lives. I have to say is much better than it was years ago but some people just don’t see the beauty within people especially their colours and where do they come from. I think the problem of why race still hasn’t changed completely is because people haven’t learned to not judge, they judge because they don’t see the light, they expect people to be what they want them to be. I think if we will still talk about race, racism, etc we will make the world a better place to live in.

Feminism

I think feminism has changed throughout the years but it doesn’t mean it got better as men and women still fighting for their rights and their voice, they are still expecting the same respect and for people to listen when they speak up. Feminism has never been about being above man or woman it has always been about equality which we still as a community have to work on.

Ola Blogs/ Identity

                                                    Identity

Our class has been working on a project called Identity and it is a play about finding yourself and embracing who you are, also is about accepting yourself and your differences, This play is like every character tells a story about themselves inside their head, that story makes you what you are at the end. This is a play done by everyone and it includes important information about racism and feminism that everyone needs to talk about. All of us had to work on our characters that describe our personality and at first, we have worked on monologues and do so some researchers about identity. Our teacher showed us a video of identity that shows how all of us hide from the world by wearing a mask and that is acceptable to be different. As a class, we have started to work on our play by discussing with each other about our identity and interviewing one another with questions for example '' Where do you come from ?'' and Do you have any siblings?. Identity is about who you are as a person and your race, as a group we have understood the knowledge about identity so we have started to bring the whole play into action by learning the monologues that we have wrote and discussing with the teacher how we are going to represent it to the world. Subsequently, we have started putting everything together and rehearsing the play step by step every single day to perfection, we had made some changes to this play which is our positions and our lines of monologue but also we had to add a part to the play which was my interview as part of my monologue, this play has helped everyone to work as a team and boost up our confidence.

Identity

Blogs Diary

Monday 5th October - Today was my first day in college and at first we were doing some breathing exercises, we sat on the floor and started to breathe in and breath out in 4 or 8 counts then we stand in a wide circle and started to breathe in and breath out but this time we were humming and saying words such as mu.mi.ma. Afterwards, we got into a group of 4 and started to work on our scrip, practising and learning the lines, after that everyone was supposed to perform it in front of the class, my group went first and we had to do it again as someone from our group got out of the character and started to laughing but on the second try, it went great. After lunch, we had to continue working on our essays.

Overall I think that everyone did work really well as a team and were full of focus in the lessons. I really did enjoy my first day in college, I have made some friends and had good progress in the lessons. The thing that most of us had to work on would be staying in the character as I think that sometimes we get lost in time and forget to focus

In the lesson Im developing my confidence by saying lines out loud in front of the audience and staying in the character.

Tuesday 6th October - On this day, we were in the theatre and we were practising our play for the performance with Rob with lights to know what is like to perform on the stage with the full effects. After lunch, we continued with our play in the lesson but it didn't go really well as the students were not behaving and someone had a panic attack.

Overall I think that the lesson with Rob was good as everyone was On their best behaviour and did everything they could. I think that all of us have to stay concentrated more in the lessons and listen to the teacher because we will have a performance and I wouldn't want anyone to fall behind.

In today's lesson, I have worked on my imagination and character, also I was full of energy and have maintained my focus throughout the play.

Thursday 8th October - On this day, we were having a meeting with Rob on Google meet. We were practising tongue twisters and after that, we were discussing dialogue and that we need to write 6 lines for each character A and B. I wrote a story about a stranger kidnapping both people named Isobel and Mark, others wrote about drama, friends, and a party.

Monday 12th October - On this day, at first we were doing some breathing exercises, we stand in a circle and started to count to 4 breath in and at 8 breath out. After that, we were rehearsing our play over and over again but this time we have added an extra piece to the play which I and the student have to ask each other where do we come from and etc because she is part of the private school and I'm part of the staged school. In the next lesson, we are in the theatre and we were practising again our play.

Overall I think that the students were much more focused and full of energy than they were before but the students have to get better at delivering the lines in the right way and while performing not to look tried. The one thing that I definitely have to improve would be facing the audience while saying my lines.

Tuesday 13th October - On this day, we were rehearsing a choreography that I have made for everyone to a song called This Is Me. I was teaching every student of the movements step by step over and over again till they will remember it, after that we were rehearsing our whole play with the dance routine this time and in between the rehearsal we were being recorded by our teacher. In the next lesson, we were in the theatre practising our play for 15 minutes.

Overall I think that the students were on good behaviour and some of the students that did the choreography did well following every step and learning it. I think as our performance is on Monday, our rehearsal was bad because it was too rushed and everyone looked really tired like they didn't want to do it, some students were focused and some weren't. I think that on our last rehearsal and our final performance we have to give our best and shine on the stage. I think that I will have to improve on facing the audience while saying my lines and give more energy.

Thursday 15th October - On this day, we had an online meeting with our teacher and we were just talking about our performance and discussing what went well and what didn't about the rehearsal that the teacher has recorded with her phone. Overall I'm so excited about the performance and I really do believe everyone is going to be amazing on the stage.

Monday 19th October - On this day, we were rehearsing for the last time our whole play as it was the day of the performance, on our first rehearsal we were trying to get everything right as it should be and figured out what lights effects work great. On the second rehearsal, we were learning the choreography over and over again so every student that took the part get it right and remember every step before the performance. On the third rehearsal, we run through the whole play again for perfection. After lunch, we have run through the play again so that we are ready and prepared for our performance. Afterwards, we have sat down in the theatre and have watched level 3 Performing Arts play at first and it was really interesting the way they have done it in pairs individually and after them, it was our turn to perform and it was really exciting performing in front of the audience, I felt so confident when I have stepped on the stage.

Overall I think that the rehearsals were good and everyone knew what they were doing, we have really put our heads together for the rehearsals and our energy was much better. I think the performance went really well because everyone has worked so great as a team and all of us was full of energy while performing. The part that did go well about the rehearsals was the concentration and about the performance was definitely the energy. The part that didn't go so well about the rehearsals was lack of energy and with the performance was that some of us really looked like they just have walked on the stage with no ambition towards acting.
